Doesn't fewer missed putts mean lower scores which could well be below par or well below par for some ?

Yes it can...depends upon approach shots I suppose.

My point is that the scoring isn't my main goal - fun is.

And "frustrating" isn't fun.

I just want to be able to get an accurate read and no aids putting just isn't good enough for me yet due to graphical limitations.

Just seen a comment on steam from PP saying that they hope to get the update out early next week. :)

Well. let's hope someone doesn't create a course where the greens are made of 3D grass. :)

The current 2d textures laid over a flat grid works fine on the greens...

Just need better textures for those of us playing above 1080p

The game has always looked good, even great, from a distance.  Up close is where the textures can be an eyesore.

Having had the new U5 build since Saturday evening, as well as other changes for me personally the putting is a great improvement. Some of the other 'beta branch' guys have been posting pics and comments in other threads, so I'll not go over that old ground.

I'm not going in to how good it is or isn't for reading putts unaided, as my point of view is as one who uses only the BLI. The revised physics and improved graphical appearance are all a move in the right direction. Some greens you can look at and can gauge how the green slopes even without the BLI. The BLI just then adds that confirmation of where the breaks are and how severe the sloping is.

Ball roll up and down hill is much improved, with the ball gathering pace on downhill slopes unlike in U4 where it stayed at one set speed. I've found myself having to relearn the BLI to a degree, as other testers agreed, there seemed to be a little more break in the putts compared to U4. AJ confirmed this by saying there was something within U4 builds that was damping the break and roll on slopes and the move to U5 has gotten rid of this.

Add in to all this the revised putt meter, now the standard click meter as will be familiar to all clickers, the challenge of 40-50 ft putts is now ramped up, now that we have lost the 'aim to flag' on the meter. Motion swing players will also see the addition of a horizontal version of the current motion swing, which should come with both left hand and right hand options.

I'm sure there will still be plenty of poo-pooers and naye sayers even when the build comes to all the community, but for me personally the project is moving in the right direction and I hope you all get as much fun and enjoyment from it as me.

Finally, this post is not intended as a poke in the eye to the community, as some folks might see it, just because I have the build and the majority of you don't. I'm just trying to keep you folks in the loop, as reading your discussions here a lot of you are making predictions of what you will and won't see. Just trying to help the thread along and not cause any animosity.

Daz that is some great info and cant wait to try it out.  From what I am gathering its the putting that will be a re-learn and not the swing itself as now it will make those long putts a chore but hey that's the way it is in real golf so why not here.  Again thanks for the input.

G,

In a nutshell yes. The gameplay is the same, but the breaks on the greens are more subtle, so re-learning what the grid and BLI is conveying will be the key.

The swing functionality is still the same, but with the flag removed and a full swingmeter instead of the current U4 shortened putting meter.

Yes putting is about to become a huge part of the game. Far more sensitive. You're going to walk off a lot of greens feeling good about a two putt as opposed to expected.  ;) Trying to determine how much to add or subtract for uphill and downhill putts is considerably more difficult.

Exactly how it should be. It will have the effect of making the accuracy of your pitching and chipping more important. Before, anywhere on the green was an almost automatic two putt.

Another putting update. Here is a reverse cam replay view of a putt from me testing earlier on Hole 7 @ Southampton Links. This recorded effort was my 4th (and closest) attempt from about 39ft away, lol. Also note the fixed smaller sized ball marker.

Looks great!  Great to see those trees moving in the breeze very naturally (and the smaller ball marker for sure!)
