So basically create the biggest square possible to encompass the course, and then increase the resolution up to say 4097?

I only say 4097 as have yet to do a course that wont fit in a 4kmx4km, and I do try to keep the sculpting tools to 1 unit = 1m as maximum.

I just hate all the empty areas thats all

John its really the opposite. I would say create the smallest square possible while leaving 100 yds or so to the plot edge.

Instead of stacking, placing the course diagonally may be a small advantage as well to shrink down the terrain size as much as possible. Just depends on the layout.

Apologies Mike, my reply was poorly worded, thats what I meant.

I think this answers my question on a new posting I just made (oops). I will try to delete the new posting. :(

Also it looks like I'll have to break down and do the Layers Tutorials. At this point I can't even figure out how to find the plot resolution, etc.

There is no problem with these numbers but just be aware as DP said that it will run a little slower than a 2049 heightmap and the other numbers you have ramped higher than the tutorial project's settings.

Where do I find these numbers. I'm working from the tutorial settings, but I want to add a Google Earth overlay to aid in design.

How do you find/get Lidar data? I’m new to course forge but years ago I did my home course (West Lancashire) on the JN Course Design and want to do the same with CF. I understand this is a flint axe to nuclear warhead leap but I want to get it as close to real as possible. I’ve watched all the tutorials I can find and they are brilliant (thank you all) but one thing that is confusing me. Is every hole a stand alone “course”? What I mean is if two holes run close together do changes to one hole appear in the playing of the adjacent hole if they are in the defined OOB area? If two OOB areas overlap does this create issues. I just want to start on the right foot.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Holes aren't standalone, you create the whole course on one plot of land and you can only have one OOB on the plot so you have to weave it in and out of holes if you need internal areas of OOB.

First you'd need to find out if suitable LiDar data is available for the area.

Each hole is not it's own course. (1 terrain, 1 course)

Only 1 OB spline, usually around whole course, but can snake

into the interior.

My advice is start on a fictional course to learn how to use everything. Even if it is just a 6 or 9 hole course it should help you to start understanding how to use all of the tools and how things like out of bounds work. For LIDAR data you may try starting here - http://www.perfectpa...ter-file-method

Cheers for the advice. I remember on the old JN Design when you had shared fairways or nearby greens you had to create them on both holes separately. I understand about the oob now. The tutorial from Mike Jones said that you had to complete the oob around the hole in order to play the game but having watched it again I realise that was to enable him to show the demo hole in gameplay. I’m learning slowly.
