Hi Jerry. Yes, it will be a free update (IMO an upgrade) for Windows 8 device owners. Microsoft heard the world's dislike for the sudden change in the user interface and is going to make changes that will make W8 more user friendly. Whether it comes from Windows Updates or Microsoft's Online Store is not known. Word will spread fast the day they make the update available. My guess is that it may be a very large download from Microsoft's Online Store.

In the meantime, anyone who doesn't like the UI (User Interface) of Windows 8 can download a free app from IOBIt.com.
Uncheck any of the other app demos they may include in the download.

Also, Classic Shell performs similarly if anyone is interested.

There are over 9 downloads of a Windows 8 Start Menu. Anyone who wants to experiment with them, just search www.google.com and type in 'Windows 8 Start Menu Download' .

As for me, Windows 7 will be my main OS until 2020, unless Windows 9 has a separate OS like XP, Vista or 7 on startup for those of us who use mice and keyboards and like to sit in front of our computer screens.

I've actually made steps towards customizing W8 to be more "functional" in the past few weeks. It's not too bad, but it's still nowhere near as comfortable to me as Windows 7 was. Maybe the upcoming service packs/updates will really improve it.

I guess Windows 8 is just a mix OS. Windows 98SE - Windows ME - Windows XP - Windows Vista - Windows 7 - Windows 8
ME and Vista have been Tests for XP and Win 7 and I guess Win 8 is the same for Win 9 (or whatever it will be called). Thats why I never had ME, Vista and I will never have 8
Who cares...

Precisely. It's the Windows model. Innovate to the point of ridiculousness, and then fix it with the next one.

One thing I hate about Windows 8 is how it tries to force you to buy certain apps and not let you install apps you want. It's all about forcing the tablets on us and that annoyed me.

Simply put, W8 was not created for PC desktops or laptops with a mouse and keyboard. Horrendous mistake by M$. Fortunately I was able to tell 100's of people in August 2012 to buy a W7 computer in walk-in retail stores before W8 replaced them on the shelves.
Anyone can still buy W7 online, see:>> Desktop upgrades and new machines

Have you done the upgrade? If so, what do you think of the changes?
The new Start Button is IMHO, pretty lame.

I installed 8.1 consumer preview and found the new Start Button a farce. I still recommend to anyone who is "stuck with W8" to download the start button at iobit.com. It's free and all you need do is uncheck a couple demo programs that appear during installation. Yes, there are many other W8 Start Menus online but after experimenting with six of them I found the one I mentioned above to be the best (for me). Plus, you can configure it to stop the Tile Screen from loading so the computer boots directly to the Desktop Screen.

So who has W8 and likes it?

Who installed W8 update 8.1? What to you think about it?

Thanks for the info regarding the desktop load, I've sent some information to my father who is struggling badly with Win 8.
