Maximum number feasible for trees on a course?

Best Answer Mike Jones , 14 October 2015 - 08:21 PM

I don't think it is a specific number of trees that is a problem.

MJ has previously advised CF testers to not let all the 3D objects within their designs exceed 3 million polygons. The course would still run but the FPS would start to suffer.

The 3 million polys is a rough guide but you can go more but obviously it's going to be more taxing on people's systems. It's up to the designer to know where to draw the line.

I was just wondering when placing trees around the course what would the maximum number be before you start getting too many and maybe have lag etc come into play?

25k?

50k?

Here's a post MJ made to the CF testers back in August, when discussing course layouts and cintent and how it would run in PG.

Yep gotta get that tri count down to @ 3 million max if you want fast FPS in game.

Eventually it comes down to a choice by the creator of the course though about how much detail is enough. Personally it was the same with Links 2003, some people just planted stuff all over without regard to drawing times but I spent hours optimising my courses and IMO it was time well spent. If something is not in view 90% of the time, take it out. If 10 bushes will do instead of 20, then delete those extra ones etc.
