You can just drag a texture into your project folder to use in Unity. After that go to the terrain inspector, texture painting tab and select edit textures, you can add the texture to your painting set. Generally 2048 textures are better to get the best resolution in game.

I usually use .jpg and 1024x1024.

Would that be c:\users\myusername\documents\projectname then assets or library ?

Just drag it into your asset window in your Unity project (or a subfolder for textures therein) - physically grab, drag and drop it in there with your mouse. Unity will then automatically copy your texture image into the right place. You will end up with the original in the old location and a Unity working copy inside your project folder.

Are you just using your own created textures using some kind of art software or are you grabbing textures from somewhere? Possibly both? What about the bump maps? I'm not quite ready to go down that road but I will at some time.
