Chances of a better Unity?

Best Answer Mike Jones , 21 November 2016 - 10:48 AM

If you think CF is tough you should have tried APCD!

We designed CF with the ultimate goal of allowing the designers to pretty much anything they wanted and also to use the exact same software we use. You don't often (if ever) get that chance with content creation software. At the same time if you stick to the basics and go slowly it's pretty easy to make a course.

We have had many people who have never used any course design software before, create courses of their own with CF. By their 'own courses' I mean their personal designs and not some autogenerated generic course.

We will keep adding to CF and attempt to make it more user friendly but the truth is that CF is already much more user friendly than Unity. Conversely my experience with Unity is that they will add stuff and also break stuff with their updates in the future so don't expect Unity itself to get any more user friendly than it already is.

Wondering whether there's any chance that a new version of Unity is down the road? I'm not complaining about the learning curve (which is steep but manageable). Its the buggy, quirky things that happen to people frequently. The soul crushing, mind boggling problems that I've experienced, and read about frequently on the forums. The victims who fall prey to this or that "recognized eccentricity". Is Unity going to get better in the future? Or maybe an enhanced Courseforge that keeps people from falling into the many pitfalls, and focuses Unity more onto the immediate task at hand (designing golf courses without the trauma). It could also eliminate some of the niggly things that people do wrong without realizing it (removing the mesh before changing elevation for example). I know...I'm needy.

There will eventually be new versions to CF and Unity but if you cannot build a course with the current versions, you will not be able to build a course with the new ones.

Hello worrybirdie,

I believe I understand your frustration. I designed quite a bit with The Golf Club and it is much easier to use. That being said, the way Perfect Parallel has done things allows for basically course design modding. The first one restricts you with what you are given from the developer while the latter allows for user created content to be added.

I do know that Jack Nicklaus Perfect Golf itself is moving up to a more recent version of Unity. I am reasonably sure you know this as well. This leads me to believe that Course Forge will be doing the same. However, with all forms of software there are always bugs to crush. Currently what we have requires a tremendous amount of patience and perseverance. That might not change much further down the road but surely things will be a little better, I am not saying you do not have patience or a sense of perseverance, I'm just saying that those qualities are required in great amounts with any type of modifiable programming software.

I do know that Mike Jones has alluded to additional content and feature being added to Course Forge and the Course Forge Updater within the Perfect Parallel tab within Unity is encouraging. As DPRoberts is saying though you will still need to know how to swim even if the pool is not quite so deep. I would encourage you to keep trying with the intention of simply learning the software the way it is now and have no expectation of actually completing a course. Eventually you will produce one if you keep at it would be my guess.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you'll find you get what you need. (credit to The Rolling Stones),
