Allowable distance

What is the allowable distance from maps edge before the outside of map shows up in the mini map...if theres no way to move tees /greens/fairways....Is there anyway to fix it if it does...Cheers...

All this would do is make the distance between gridpoints a bit larger and you would loose precision and details when sculpting. You would struggle a tiny bit more to make crisp edges and abrupt changes in elevation, which on and around the greens are sometimes needed to add tiers and drop-off zones whilst keeping the edge of the green flat.

A terrain with a base height map of 2049 can measure 20 meter or 20 kilometers along its sides - and still has the same amount of tris and "weighs" the same in terms of file size or processing work. The resolution is the relevant setting, not the length of the sides.

 

So, it's possible to go XL. Whether this is wise, I'm not too sure about that....  If you already have drawn meshes, increasing the size of the terrain might also void your CF work, so I wouldn't encourage you to do that.

 

These considerations are best made before you start work on a project. Don't just design away blithely without a plan until, oops, you've designed yourself into a corner and then ask around for a quick fix.  Make a plan, draw a layout, crunch the numbers, and only then start actual work in Unity.

I have fooled around with terrain sizes above 5000. My current project is 4314 (who knows how I even got to that number, but whatever) in size. Now that being said I think it also is important that my heightmap resolution is 4097. Everything seems to be working out well for me and it loads fine in JNPG, well, at least the one hole I have layed out.

No restriction. You can make a hole as long as you want. You don't even need 18 holes, though that is the maximum number of holes CF lets you build. And the highest par number on offer is a par 6. Other than that, you can defy all conventions.

I don't want to start a new thread so will post here maybe someone will still be reading this thread thing - Ok is there a standard fairway width (25 yards ???)I am making a semi- tough hole but don't want it to unrealistic I could play test it but my golf skills are those of a dachshund so for me the standard width would about 100 yards ... 

 

while we are here how about green sizes (4300 sq ft ???)  google says 3500 to 9000 square feet well that narrows it down..... maybe I could play some of kablammo courses and is there a yardstick I could use while playing blammo corp only allows me to ride around in golf carts. 

 

I want standards for CF 

There are no standards. That is the beauty of it all. There surely are some typical guidelines but become an artist. Look at what others in the past have done and tread your own way. I want to see what JH Buchanan is capable of producing.

A guideline could be somewhat based on accuracy of the golfers and how challenging you would like to make it. Go to PGA tour.com and check out the accuracy of the best players in the world.


A typical good driver of the ball does not deviate more than 10 yards from center of the fairway. A 20 yard wide fairway would therefore be somewhat narrow except for the best. Jack Nicklaus designs for ball position approach to pin and therefore designs wide fairways. Hole 6 at Muirfield Village is one his wider ones at 48 yards in the landing area. Carnoustie is known for tight fairways and 18 has one area about 18 yards wide. I'm guessing average may be 35. Newer courses in the US favor the bomb and gouge approach to golf.

Another approach may be to choose your favorite course (even if only ever watched on television) and head to Google maps and measure from satellite overheads. If you right click on a Google Map, you can choose "Measure distance" and see what others have done.

I can't wait to see what a JH Buchanan fairway and green will be like. Does he favor a challenge off the tee? Does he put a premium on iron play with smallish greens? Does he prefer variety throughout the course and base on surrounding challenges, such as trees or water hazards?
