This is the first time I've ever tried laying out a fictional course over a real piece of terrain - Standley Lake is a huge reservoir in northwest Denver that has a fairly large recreation area and park on the southern side of it, and on many days in mid summer you can see boats everywhere.
I've always felt an undeveloped area to the north and west of the lake was suitable for a great golf course..... so I put in a request for lidar, and got it. The result is this course.
In keeping with the wide open, rural feel of this one I've decided to be economical with tree planting, only adding large trees in areas where there are existing stands of trees. I've also tried to be very minimalist with the elevation; generally most of the holes are laid out exactly as the land does, although I've added some mounding in places and also improved some tee shots that were blind. Other than that, there has been an effort to manipulate the land as little as possible.
