Knighters (Ian?) as far as I know, you are correct in that all you need to know in unity is creating a terrain, manipulating that terrain and also how to import and apply textures. The skybox has changed in unity5 so I wouldn't get too hung up on that. I haven't got courseforge so I can't comment anymore on that but it sounds like you are on the right track. There are more advanced bits like the trees and grasses but that's for another day!
Cheers
Bruce

Thanks Brucey,
I will learn the extra bits after I have picked up the basics. I haven't downloaded Unity 5 yet, I'm learning on an earlier version.

I didnt know how to use Unity at, all I had previously only used was TW06 Course Architect, Photoshop and 3D Max for what I needed it for.

I searched Google for what a Heightmap for Unity was(never knew before).

I searched Google on how to make a heightmap.

I searched Google on how to import it into Unity.

I searched Google and read the whole of the Course Forge section for as much information I could find on how to work the terrain.

Its all there if you look, and it really is simple once you get it.

It wasn't easy and it was time consuming but ultimately it was something I wanted to learn

Cheers RobC

Thanks Rob,
It sounds like you did it the hard way. I have no experience with TW, Photoshop or 3D Max so I'm starting at a very low point.

Success. This video is brilliant for basic terrain, adding textures, hills and trees.

Still working away... Inbetween playing Celtic Manor 2010 Course (Which would look amazing in PG) and The Masters and every time I use Unity AND Course Forge it gets easier and more familiar:-

Looking at the S.I.1 6th Green across the pond...I always thought it needs bulkhead along the green side so maybe I will add them here

and a look at the front 9 from above in Unity

There are still lots of tweaks and stuff yet...plus I would really like to give it play in PG hopefully sometime soon

but its getting there

Cheers RobC

Rob are you saying that although you are testing Course Forge you have no way of testing the course in Perfect Golf yet?

Is the reflective water included now? That's a game changer.

Oh, to get my little hot hands on this program...

Yeah, Unity 5 has the "pro" water as a free asset now.  Lots of stuff you can do with it.

Just had my first dabble with Unity. Followed the tutorial posted above. Made sense. Think I can do this...really want to be able to use Course Forge when it is released. So much to learn...but I am very determined since designing golf courses has always been a casual hobby of mine whether just drawing plans or in Links (spent hours on APCD but never had internet access at that time so never published or upgraded)

Published a couple of courses on TGC but I just don't enjoy playing that game.

What are the best free (or at least good value) assets for unity that would be useful please?

Looking great so far Rob.

Wow blast from the past Brian.  Rolling Evergreen is one of my favourite courses ever played :)  Sure hope you get your hands on the designer some time and knock that out in Course Forge.  Apologies for the off topic comment.
