I was wondering if with the HTC VIVE one has to use the controller or can you play games while seated and just the VR headset for immersion. I was never a big fan of the Wii motion controllers or Xbox Connect. I've heard that for seated gaming and simple 3d visual immersion the Oculus Rift may be the way to go. Of course which games support which is also a consideration.

I would love JNPG to have both options to play first person golf VR while seated or with a motion controller. That way you also capture the VR crowd that may not have the space to set up the motion sensor area.

SC  B)

With TGC VR you have to use the controller and you have to physically swing.  IMHO you're missing out on 75% of the immersion if you're sitting down using a normal gamepad but just seeing the game in 3D.  The coolest part about the game is the actual swing and the immersion into the landscape.  Being able to walk around a bit and crouch down to read the greens (which works ridiculously well) is really fantastic.

Can you slice and draw with you swing of the controller or is everything  straight ?

You can most definitely move the ball with your swing/setup just like you would in real life.  The club motion tracks perfectly with what you are doing on the controller and the stance/setup matters a ton as well.

For instance - depending on the scenario (real life golf here) I sometimes chip by lining the ball up on my front foot and putting all my weight there.  I then hit down onto the ball pretty firmly.  This generates a lower chip with lots of spin (for me).  But sometimes I play a shot with the ball more towards the middle of my stance and more open club face so that the ball flies a bit higher and lands a bit softer but with less spin.

I can do exactly what I do IRL with TGC VR.  It's dead nuts on what I'd expect.

Getting back on this topic do we know whether this update will come out this year?, will the console releases be before the console release of tgc2? Do we know if we will get this promising career mode this year? I love the challenge of this game, realize the smallness of the dev team. Just wondering these questions. I will probably play both games but having developed an original course on tgc (one that I am obsessively updating for tgc2 I wonder if i should put in the time to learn course forge and create it here as well. It's a real life highly rated public course . But it takes a lot of work to get these courses right. (Months)

Correct. But nothing above is discussing TGC.

LOL, the last thing I would do with this crowd is announce a release date.  Saying "soon" was bad enough... :)

It would be an advantage for JNPG to come out on the consoles before TGC 2.  At this point, I'd say only the XBox One version has a chance of beating it to the punch however.  I recall reading earlier that PP already had the game running in an XBox One environment, which bodes well for the transition.  What I can't get a handle on is how PP will handle user made courses for for the XBox One, if at all.  JNPG courses aren't stored on a central server and accessed on the fly like The Golf Club's.

Reading the tea leaves, I'd say PP won't release JNPG on a console until they have a career mode ready to roll.  I've got a hunch that they have something pretty ambitious in mind for a career mode, and that may be the deciding factor on when the console versions get released more than anything else.

I think the Dev team is on the right track by not doing a complete rebuild until a career mode, new ani`s, etc, are ready, but am I right to understand Andrew to say that 3d grass , new ball bounce physics, and improved AI performance will be coming in an update before the rebuild?

It will not.  Devs have not given an ETA on 3D grass yet.

It says in the first post that the 3D grass pictures are very very early work in progress.

Actually they did.

NVIDIA Turf Effects

For the last month we have been working on taking the Turf Effects module from NVIDIA and writing a custom integration with Unity which uses Unity's low level graphics plugin infrastructure.  We have managed to get a working Turf Effects inside a sample unity application and now have to integrate it into CF and PG.  Unfortunately Turf Effects is dx11 only so we will have to create a new version of PG that is DX11 and up only so it will be on a separate build, probably part of an XBOX / Universal Windows 10 app release of PG.  This is scheduled for completion around middle of October.

I believe he meant completion in terms of beta builds for testers to test.  Not that it was gonna be ready for public release in Oct.

I'm in the private beta test group and so far we have had no DX11 only version of JNPG to test nor have we had any 3D grass to test either.

Once again, I think Andrew will rue giving a scheduled completion date for something, lol.

:D
