well just dragged out the old Nintendo Wi console and played the Tiger Woods 2010 game, I was really impressed with the control system, to get 100% shot power you really need to give it the full swing treatment all the way back and all the way through, I was knackered after 18 holes LOL,

This just reinforced my belief the PG need a Virtual Reality option in the game and maybe one of those VR walking Platform's so you have to walk to your ball before you hit it, just think how much fitter we would all be,I know its in the future but I like to dream,

Just hope I am around long enough to see it LOL

I also really hope there's a PG VR someday.
I'm insanely jealous of the early reports of TGC VR with the HTC Vive

I have to say that I've been loving my time with TGC VR.  It fits somewhere between a good 2D golf simulation experience and a full-on golf simulator (with real clubs and real balls).  While it's certainly never going to replace a full-on simulator it's probably the next best thing.  Frankly, it's made 2D golf quite boring for me.

How does this TGC VR thing work?  How do you swing?

Z,

The Vive comes with a hand held controller and you swing that (while wearing headset obviously). So you play it like you would play golf on the Wii or on the PS with the Move controllers.

You hold the controller like a golf club and swing.  Right now this is the only downside as it's a bit of an adjustment swinging something with no weight and no proper weight distribution.  I'm guessing if things take off a bit more we'll see a proper third party "club" controller that helps with this quite a bit.

The VR experience is extremely impressive for something so early in the development cycle.  Every thing I've tried has blown me away.  In simple things like playing ping pong are just stupid-good.  Project Cars VR is awesome too.  TGC VR is extremely good in my opinion.

IMO, VR fills the void between sat playing the game on a PC or console and playing the game with real clubs on a simulator with Trackman, Skytrak etc.

Mebby has highlighted the one downside, that swinging with the handheld controller doesn't give the feel of swinging an actual club, but it does a good job to make you feel you're in the game.

I'm considering a VR for myself at Christmas, but it would be mainly used for my driving sims/games. So having to decide whether to go PC with a Vive or OC or get the PSVR for my PS4.

Interesting.  Don't know if PG VR is even being talked about.   But once it goes to Xbox, I can see it working with a connect controller.  That would be cool.  If I didn't have a full blown sim, I would play with a connect or PS move.

There's literally no reason for you to consider any sort of golf VR title when you've got a full simulator.  I mean, that's the Rolls Royce of video game golf for sure.  VR would simply be a novelty next to a full simulator.  It's very cool to be able to walk over to your bag and grab a club and look at the yardage book and all that but when it comes to pure gameplay and physics a simulator is always going to have an edge.

Watching that video makes me want to throw up.  Similar to playing first person shooters.

I share your pain. I even get a bit nauseous watching action movies in 3D. :(

It should be noted that you don't feel nauseous or anything like that when the headset is attached to your head.

Remember, watching VR output video is the equivalent of watching a WebCam attached to somebody's eyeballs as their head moves around.

Wit looks pretty cool but to be honest I play real golf once a week and that's enough for me at this point and after work I just like to sit in front of my PC and play. Besides after watching that video I would probably kill myself trying to hit the dang thing.

Hah, having the golf bag on a green when putting is a no no/criminal offence/sacrilege. I'm shocked and disgusted at this appalling error by HB studios. :D

I had my first VR related injury playing ping pong.  I lunged for a ball that the computer had hit into the net and hard just barely landed on my side.  My brain was expecting to be able to brace myself on the "table"

Yea... table wasn't there.  Trying to tell you brain what's going on in that split second just doesn't quite work.

Does anyone know how realistic the VR swing is with a golf game like TGC? In addition to the lack of weight and strange feel of using a controller to swing, I would be surprised if even using a club replica as controller would be much like a real golf swing. I know when I've tried the Wi golf game (not VR though), my regular golf swing did not work well within the game. Instead, I had to execute a very "wristy" move with the controller to get good results. I suppose someone could create a pretty realistic club replica using sensors that could detect speed and position of the club head, but ball contact and turf interaction would be hard to measure at lost cost. And we know how expensive even low-cost launch monitors are, so measuring ball flight accurately wouldn't be easy/cheap.

I"m sure a well-executed VR system would create a more immersive game experience for a computer golf gamer, but I would be surprised if a club-like controller could be built at low cost to respond realistically to an actual golf swing any time soon. For now, the full-sim option using a launch monitor like SkyTrak or GC2 with a game like JNPG provides the most realistic way to play virtual golf using a real swing. I can see where a VR option could be fun, though, if you like the visuals of the VR experience and don't mind using a controller to swing.

I was wondering if with the HTC VIVE one has to use the controller or can you play games while seated and just the VR headset for immersion. I was never a big fan of the Wii motion controllers or Xbox Connect. I've heard that for seated gaming and simple 3d visual immersion the Oculus Rift may be the way to go. Of course which games support which is also a consideration.

I would love JNPG to have both options to play first person golf VR while seated or with a motion controller. That way you also capture the VR crowd that may not have the space to set up the motion sensor area.

I've been playing TGC VR for about 3 weeks now and I'd say that the swing is very realistic.  You're not going to get away with a wrist flick or some doctored up shortcut swing and be successful in the game.  The controller tracking is very precise.  There's an in-game swing analyzer that will show you your exact swing path and from this you will get an appreciation of exactly how precise it is.

The biggest issue with VR golf at the moment is the controller and the lack or weight and proper weight distribution.  For those that have played a lot of real life golf it can be difficult to conduct a good swing this way because you're lacking the weight of the club to help keep your swing on path.  It doesn't take long to get used to but it is an adjustment.  It's not an issue on pitches or chips as much as it is on full swings. Putting is similar in that because there is no weight to the club it's very difficult to keep the club head straight and on path.  It's almost like the putting motion needs a little numbness in the sensitivity settings to keep it from being so twitchy.  But again, you adapt to this pretty quickly as well.

I currently have a propensity to not bring the club down on the same path as I take it back.  In other words, if I line up my club head directly behind the ball it's likely that my downswing path will be on the other side of the ball from me.  Again, this is due to the lack of weight.  I am starting to adjust on this as well but it's taking a little longer.

But trust me when I say that the swing is very accurate and true to your form.  And the game itself is super immersive and fun.  The short game (including putting) is just ridiculously good.

I'm a 13 handicapper in real life and I've yet to break 90 in this game.  So in some ways I'd say it's harder than real golf at the moment due to the lack of club weight.  But I'm getting better and better the more I play.
