I probably don't have a powerful enough machine to play it, as my computer is from 2009, but I wanted to have a crack anyway. I pretty much play exclusively on medium; there are a couple I can get away with high, but I can't play anything ultra high as a clicker.... I should probably learn to play with RTS and see if it is better.

I found that the 1st and 3rd holes did slow performance and one or two other spots did as well (maybe #6); sometimes there would be slight delays while the ball was in the air, but at no point did I experience any stuttering with the click meter which is kind of the litmus test for this machine.

I wouldn't ask or expect you to optimize the course any further as you have clearly made every effort to do so...  while it is borderline for me, it is absolutely playable. But I don't really play a lot anyway... most of the time I just like to hit F5 and fly over holes and appreciate the texture and design work, which on this course is truly second to none. Textures as well are great, especially tees and fairways.

If I had any other thing to critique, I'd say that a lot of the par four holes felt similar, both in strategy and in appearance. But those are subjective things.

Obviously a lot has been said about the bunker technique; I'm still not quite sure what's been done exactly, but it is a pretty amazing effect. As a fairly prolific (but lazy) designer myself, I'm not convinced that I'd have the focus or patience to take on the amount of extra effort that would be required, but at the same time I am glad to see a designer I always respected on other mediums take some chances and pushing the envelope at bit with what is possible with these tools; many courses I've seen released here lately look like they are unfinished so the experimentation is appreciated.

How'd you get ballwashers with towels that wave in the wind?

Nice effort mate,i see  now what all the fuss was re Bunkers- well done

Plenty of planting going on surrounding holes, could be a bit too much as some are having problems being slow and stuttering

I did mention about increasing Pixel Error  Settings

Good design layout, mix of long and short holes.

Found a lot of areas around the bunkers just need smoothing a tad more

The Different coloured textures  with round circles around the pin means you have used an older version of the texture Library

as i had this problem is several of my previous courses.

Found a few areas where the bunkers need attention  also

Some of the tee`s are floating and not planted flat onto the terrian

Noticed some blurry sections here and there as well

Rough texture surrounding places is tiled too much-Increase tile size to fix this

Hole 7  pic shows  Texture n underneath showing through the terrain

Maybe also check pin locations as some  have a bit too much slope

Pictures pointed out will show you what i am seeing my end

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByTR6w_prq1MOTkwSjBLbFZFS3c

Plays fairly well on my  PC

Thanks

to learn how to get flags or cloth moving

will work on jazzing up a few par fours so they are not that similar...and improve thought process off the tee
That will be done after the summer

Your computer is a bit old....8 years....why not upgrade? As a designer, you will notice the difference

As for the hard work, thanks

the beta fixed v1.1 are almost complete so they can approve it at OGT and release.

I have to admit I like the ladies tees and new ladies tee boxes on the longer holes. will be good for the simulators.

Its been a long haul with this course. I lost my work at about the 3rd hole last summer and gave up. then the winter came I figured Id pick it up and MJ salvaged my terrain.

I learned to properly back up my project file and purchased some thumb drives to protect my work.

the bunker formula was hit and miss for about 2 months till I figured it out.

Then i had FPS problems but the solution to dilute the bushes and add a new texture actually made the course look better.

Then the crashes last month. I almost gave up again and would have left it with no bunkers on the last hole. I just couldn’t figure it out, and it took many, many saves to find out why I was getting crashes at 30 percent.

I was maxed out on splines. apparently the splines from the bunkers where not deleted when I replaced them with FBX objects. I figured this out when I went into debug and started to delete the 300 plus “greyed out” phantom splines left over from the original bunkers

Once i figured it out it gave me new life to complete the course, and do some final tweaks.

Rob

I have just finished my first round on The Glen and firstly can I wholeheartedly congratulate you on a spectacular course.

You can see the hard work that has gone into this gem and it is very much a true work of art. The look of the course very much reminds me of those classic heathland courses in the heart of England- even though there is a coastline in play!

I must disagree with Matthew though about the similar look to it- I don't see it myself and it feels like a course that would exist in the real world.

I must mention also that even my beast of a system did suffer at higher resolutions and image quality- I use 2560*1440 with most details towards the top but I had to reduce this to medium settings at best as I was getting fps drops from 100 to as low as 35s- still playable but looking a bit chuggy! There were also a number of bunkers that were showing the texture rings around them but it didn't put off the lovely visuals.

Looking forward to v1.1

Very good show Sir!!

Cant do much about the texture rings...not too noticable, maybe i can alter the texture, but thats pretty much the best i can do.

Mat is correct on "some "of the par 4s..there are some par 4s that look similar...wack it down the middle and then to the green.  this is why I'm starting by lowering the fairway on hole #10 so you can see the landing area.

I may start by adding a few bunkers in the landing zone and split up the fairway so you can have a choice off the tee.

I would say hole 8, 10, 11, 14 look a bit simiar off the tee that is, so i will play around with holes 10 and 14 because I some room to work with on those holes.  The new ladies tees may help also.

the cool holes that need no adjustments are all the par 3's, the opening holes and final 4 holes....love the last 4 holes!

Out of interest i played a round using 3C and the fps is not so bad, went back to controller and its near unplayable again...not tested RTS-M but 3C is fine, i assume its the pause render on swing feature helping it...unfortunately i'm RTS-C so reluctantly its off my play rota.

no Rob the controller does not pause anything RTS cannot allow it, thats why 3C is fine.  Once a 3 clicker starts his/her swing those lovely towels will cease to move until swing is complete.

Maybe you can make a version for lower spec computers. I feel like trying to set the bar for computer specs too low will lose a lot with this course.

I could,...by dropping down the LOD on a second 3d grass object it may do the trick.

Or just remove 2 key 3d grass objects that may have jacked up the polys

remember this is a beta version and it can be done.

Can have The glen "pro" and the glen "lite"..will play around with it.

Its the 3d grass mixed in with the 2d grass thats most of the problem...it gives it a cool finer fesque  look that we just cant with plain 2d grasses

Thanks Rob.... that was the thread where I was trying to get an animated flag for Royal Melbourne but I never figured it out.... but I also kinda gave up on it.

New computer..... yeah, it's a conundrum; things kind of conspire every time I mean to upgrade. My wife is a professional graphic designer who works exclusively at our home, so all our computer budget pretty much goes straight there, and I kinda get the leftovers. We have a Mac and a powerful laptop with Win 10 but technically those are work machines so I'm not allowed to put my "cute golf stuff" on those.

Most of my personal spending money goes either into real golf or back into my musical equipment, which is always in need of maintenance. It often comes down to needing something else more, like a new set of in-ear monitors or replacing drum cases that my cats ruined or something like that. I think when the next Course Forge version comes out and we have the 3D grass and all that, I might make an effort to upgrade then.

In some ways it has been good for me, because it has forced me to design in a economical kind of way.... if a course is really playable on my machine then I know it will be playable on everyone else's. But there's also a part of me that really wants to push this thing...  or at least be able to play with Ultra High settings once in awhile, which I rarely get to do.

I guess everyone's opinion of what is a good or even an acceptable frame rate is different. I have a better system than many who are happy with the current performance of this course, but for me on 3-click it is too poor. I know I could alter settings to compensate but I don't like doing this for individual courses. I either forget to reset them afterwards or I can't remember what they were previously set on. The easiest way for me is to simply delete courses that require these changes to be made. I'd probably have a very different attitude if we were starved of great courses to play but there are already far more quality courses than I can comfortably play in a regular rotation, and so courses with issues like this I just don't keep.
I do admire the incredible work that has gone into this and appreciate the beauty of it. I can also understand Rob's reluctance to make more changes that would probably alter its appearance. If there are any changes to the course or JNPG in the future though I will check it out again, as it is definitely a course that would rank highly on my playlist if the performance was improved.

The FPS loss from the speedtree 3d grasses is the main culprit of the FPS issues and it still exists even if you LOD the grass. It's simply not worth it for the big FPS hit IMO.

Just add an additional terrain grass object to approximate the look of the 3d grass and sprinkle it around the tees and greens along with a little terrain painting of a darker texture mixed in under it which will simulate the grass shadowing. It would be a shame if the course didn't get played simply because of the bad FPS.
