I don't think he's pumping the forum for a possible TGC 2 simulator release, especially given his posture on it when queried about it in November.  I think they're casting their lot with a career mode upgrade at the forefront.

That will be a big yawner for me personally.  I know that they feel more people play offline career modes more than multiplayer and maybe they are right but it sure doesn't FEEL that way - especially with a golf game.  Additionally, getting a career mode right isn't going to be easy - especially from their current starting point.  And FINALLY... focusing on a career mode when so many other things are broken feels like they are straightening up deck chairs on the Titanic.

If they don't get serious about the multiplayer (and bug) fixes, I don't know what they are doing..

There are obvious issues that are well discussed on their forum.

Focusing on anything but that feels misguided - I agree with Mebby

It's like everyone is telling them "we are thirsty" and they would be telling them "here's some shredded wheat"!

TGC Simulator stuff will be announced on GSF if anything is coming. TGC2 Simulator edition was supposed to have been released last fall. Fo HB to say they had no road map for it back in November is super strange.

I have no idea how popular multiplayer is on simulators, so I didn't think about factoring that into the potential success of a simulator version that was no better off in the multiplayer department than the PC/console versions.

Multiplayer is very popular for Simulators. On nights and weekends, 50% of players in the JNPG lobby might be simulator players. OGT sim discord has over 100 players.

I wasn't expecting the epic news we got today from HB Studios... The Golf Club 2019, to be released 3Q 2018.  They went well beyond what I expected to them to do in addressing the online multiplayer weaknesses.  Here are the multiplayer bullets from their feature page:

  • Online Matchmaking brings a new streamlined experience to The Golf Club franchise for competitive play. Compete on any of the approved and official courses in a round of Head to Head Match Play, 2-4 player Stroke Play, Alt-shot or Fourball Team Play, or put your virtual currency on the line in wager matches featuring Skins. (PSPlus and Xbox Live are required for this feature)
  • Private Matches allow the player the full benefits of Matchmaking with the control over who is invited to play, the course played, round format used and additional conditions for each match. (PSPlus and Xbox Live are required for this feature)

It’s still not real time multiplayer like with JNPG, correct?

Also, looks like it’s gonna be a new full price game?

So instead of fixing the current game, they are releasing TGC 3 which in turn will fix the MP issues and add a career mode that should have been in the current version.  So basically there is no profit in fixing the game as it is now, instead they move on another version of the game that they can charge full price for...Wow! thats shameful beyond belief.  Jcat, i really don't see anything epic here,  you are basically stuck with a broken game for 10 months until the next installment gets released, and god knows if they manage to get that one right....Money grabbing Bar stewards.

From what I've seen and read so far, it looks for the world to me like it's going to be real time. I don't know know how you could manage alt-shot or team match play without it.

It will be a a new, full price game.  I'm not shocked or disappointed to learn that because I knew the game would have to be revamped to take it where it needed to be.  They're actually going to have a platform and world ranking system based on online match and medal play on pre-approved courses, but they're also going to have private matchmaking options for any of the courses in the game.

You’re assuming it’s gonna be but until they say it’s real time, it’s not real time.

Being that their customers are mostly console players, $60 for a new version is not a big deal to them.

I was pleased to see that they are addressing multiplayer for sure!  However, I'm confused by some of the language used in the Online Matchmaking versus Private Matches.  It seems like "online matchmaking" will be limited to certain courses but "private matches" will be wide open to whatever the creator desires.  Any idea on this?  I've posted a similar question over there.

Yes, I'm partly disappointed that there is NO focus on TGC2 but I understand why and they've made that pretty clear.  It doesn't absolve them from the horrible mistake they made in getting Maximum Games involved but at least they've made it clear that their hands are tied.

TGC 2019 sounds like a step in the right direction based on their commitment to implementing a reasonable multiplayer environment.  I honestly did not expect them to commit to this.

I think it goes without saying that it's real time unless specifically stated that it's not real time.  I have no clue how you could say you are implementing multiplayer without it being real time.

It depends on what your definition of real time is I guess.  Right now, if you use full animations in turn base play in TGC 2, there's a 4 to 7 second delay between your starting your swing and your opponent seeing it begin on their end.  I would call anything less than a second delay real time.  Also, real time means the game has to know the status of the other players within your group within a second of any change of state to meet my definition of real time, to meet my definition.   Right now, TGC 2 can lose track of the other player's status, even when you're trying to play turn base, and you think you're seeing them in real time, but you're actually seeing them in virtual tape delay.

The fact that they're requiring XBox Live and PS Plus subscriptions for online play is what seals the deal for me on it *likely* meeting my definition of real time play.  But yeah, you're right... I'm taking a bit of a leap of faith and assuming that it's going to happen the way I envision it happening, but I see enough evidence to support the case.  I certainly won't argue with anyone who sees it differently based on TGC's track record with multiplayer to this point.

I don't know that they won't fix TGC 2's multiplayer for sure, to at least match that of TGC 1.  Honestly, that would be the most I would possibly expect out of them at this point.  What they've done today is announce a new game, not address the current state of TGC 2.  I don't see it as a money grab, but you're not alone in your position as seeing it as one.  I see it is as a new product and justifiable as a new purchase, as it will offer significant features that were never promised nor part of the current product.

Hmm.
Busy photoshopping some screens of "TGC 3 in progress work"?
;) :D

If they really want to give "the base" a big boner, they'll announce pre-orders starting in April for a Holiday/early 2019 release..
That would pump in at least 90 more forum pages of off the rails speculation and HB praise..

No pre-orders that I saw and I was a touch off on the release date…
But who knows it might slide to the holiday season anyways…

Beyond that a pretty good prediction.
The boners are big and the praise is strong and growing

In all seriousness, it sounds like their heads are in the right space but it's just going to have to be determined how well they did down the road.

If you go read the press release it honestly reads like Shaun had a list of things to say and touch on that everybody in the forum had complained about. (The pitchfork avoidance plan)

That's good.
Hopefully they realize they need to implement all that stuff and not just say something about it.
Remember this is the group that was to the end defending their current implementation of "match play"

A lot of details are vague so I'm expecting lots and lots more information to come over the months ahead.

I would like to see some photographs of what it will look like, in particular with a real course recreation we all would know very well.

HBS has responded to my question.  They want online matchmaking to be the best experience possible (due to leaderboards and due to the fact that you can wager your coins on matches) so they will hand select the "official" courses.  It's unclear yet if you have to submit for a user created course to be deemed "official" or if it's solely up to HBS to find them.  But I think this is a good move on their part.

Private matches will have zero limitations.  Makes sense to me.
