I am doing a test and waiting to borrow a stimp meter to test out what my carpet rolls out as on a real stimp meter. Once I know that I can compare to what the Sim (GC2) show for the same carpet speed and compare numbers. Right now the Sim (GC2) is showing about a 10 stimp which is very fast for a putt compared to what we play on all year on my home course.
Bringing up an old thread to give an update on testing putt speeds. This is not a perfect way to test and is limited but shows an interesting result and may shed light on putting on the sim and thinking the speeds are too fast.
Using a real stimp meter to test a carpet speed I found it to be 11.5 to 12 stimp. I used Pro V1 balls to test as I found that some balls have different shape dimples and that caused the ball to release differently and thus roll out more than average.
When comparing a GC2 putt speed of 4.25 mph, the real ball roll on the carpet was about 10.5 to 11 feet but when using the sim stimp of 11.5 to 12 that same putt would roll in game to about 12 feet or about 10% further in game than real life.
The problem I seen was when putting on the GC2 a ball speed of 4.64 mph in game that ball rolled 20% further than real life.
Then with a 5.85 mph putt, in game it was rolling 40% further than real life. Example the real roll on the carpet was 16' to 16' 6" on average and the roll the sim in game would give you would be about 22' 6".
So it may be possible the initial ball speed of 4.2 mph to obtain a 11 to 12 foot putt would be close and within reason, as the putt speed was slightly higher, the difference became way more exaggerated.
So if you think putts are rolling way to far for longer putts you may be right.
