Dave,

We can only speculate about what the 3D grass effect will have on the game and how we will be able to judge the lies, as Mike explained.

Until we actually see it and play it, we can keep bemoaning the pros and cons of the 3D grass until we're all blue in the face. You now seem to think it is a bad move whereas I think it is for the better. We'll just have to wait until we see it in action.

Completely disagree...  I remember when Links went from that "movie-like" animation to a 3D model, it was amazing!   3C or Mouse swing, new animations are certainly welcomed in all swing forms...  I would try em all!

Yeah, my wording on that was not as I intended... I didn't really mean that a 3-clicker can't enjoy a well animated golfer, I just meant that three click swing control performance isn't dependent on the swing animation, as is the case with real time controller and mouse swings.  I've tried all swing interfaces in JNPG.  Non real time swings using motion or click just don't do much for me.  The real time mouse swing is more to my liking, but I sit in a recliner when I play, and the mouse arrangement for that makes it a bit cumbersome.

now here is something i have given a little thought to

if i decide to play in the rain which i do quite a bit when playing solo i also use real time weather quite a bit

some of the PGLS tourney are set with, not sure if they tourney in rain at OGT but this would be a big plus for the tourney players

i would like to see wet ground affects. had this on TWO and i was really

fond of it on that game.

we don't use rain settings in api play cause it does not play the same for every one. one guy gets thunder and lightning for 16 holes and the next gets it for 2 holes ...

i have only played the light rain in PGLS tourneys and it seems to just hit me for a few holes on the back so far.

thunderstorm settings would not be good for tourneys it is a big FPS hog and not consistent enough but light rain is another story.

like in real life tourneys your first groups may have rain, and an hour later.

those groups may be playing in the sunshine. since we are looking for realism

thats about as real as it gets.

You simply can't create the same variations with fixed coloured polygons that you can using photographs. Just look at the best 3D tree available in the game and compare it to a photograph of a tree. At the moment, designers are blending photographs to create textures and this creates very realistic pattern, detail, and colour changes throughout a course. This will be impossible to imitate using 3D grass. It won't be an issue when recreating manicured Augusta type courses, where everything is uniform and one coloured, but courses with a lot of colour and texture variation will be impossible, until the 3D algorithms are vastly more complex than anything that has been created to date. In real life you have patches of clover etc. mixed with grass, worn areas, patches that grow differently to those around them, subtle colour changes etc. All of these are captured using 2D photos as textures, but will not be present in the sterile environment of 3D grass. Designers will be restricted by the effects possible with 3D grass and this will limit what can be created compared to what we currently have in JNPG.

I follow your reasoning on this, based on what we've seen in the few screen shots of Turf Effects grass in JN2.  I've seen 3D rough grass in TGC 2 that doesn't have the sterile, carpet look to them.  I've seen variances in shades of green, all the way down to browned out rough in irregular patterns.  I'm away from home right now, otherwise I'd grab a few examples I've taken screen shots of because I was so impressed with it.  I'll grant you that the 3D rough in TGC 2 isn't as intricate, nor animated as what the Turf Effects rough in JN2 will be, but I suspect we'll see some creativity with how 3D rough grass is used within it.

I'll post a link to a couple of these screens I have tomorrow night.  In one of them, my ball had found a totally bare spot in the dirt, but within a couple of inches if it was browned out grass that transitioned into deeper green rough within another six inches.  It impressed me enough at the time to go out of my way and grab a screenie of it.

Modern graphics are simply a must to attract more players. If a game looks 15 years old it won't sell to the masses. Photorealistic might be good enough for us rather old folks. But the casual gamers expect an 3D-environment.

I am really looking forward to PG2. Even expand the realism and mix that with modern graphics. For me that would be - together with a very, very deep career mode - the perfect golf game.

And i really would love seeing more guys who play. Online tournament sites like OGT or PGLS could use more buzz, more players. Realistic setups with a PGA Tour, a Web.com Tour and so on.

I'd settle for a 'work in progress' update at the moment just to see how the game is evolving.

this is a great idea but i believe for it to really take off this needs to be done by PP on their courses to get the most involved.

i myself believe that is one of the main reason's for a low headcount on this game, is all the clicking and registering and stuff like that you have to do to play it, people don't want that, they want to be able to play the game through 1 site and not 3 or 4.

a lot has been said about the time consumption, to where it has become the easy way out to use gimmies and such due to time restraints , well you wanna talk about wasted time having to run all over the net to even play new courses.

this is not TW08 it is a new up and running game, where the community needs to care for it to

get players. PP should be taking care of a full game, the off sites are great for those that want more

but the base product should be a full game, with all it's own tours and tourneys, along with all the courses put in the same place so they are uploaded when logging on to steam.

Agreed Ian. And no-one here gives a damn if their timetable for release is inaccurate or is delayed or whatever. We aren't some kiddie gamers. We are mostly mature people who loyally visit these forums because we have a real and genuine interest in this bloody thing. Lighten up PP and get as enthusiastic as we are and tell us where you're at. Come on. Show us how much you like this game and tell us with a passion about your baby. We are all ears. Do it for us.

I'm hoping that they let all skill of players use all views on aiming. One reason alot of people hate tour pro and pro is you have to use the F5 cam to go and look at the green or on a dogleg to view it to aim the correct way which takes too much time. Using the map, F2, or F3 cam does not aid in making you a better player or hitting a better shot, it just saves a crapload of time!

Talk about a broken record.  You say the same stuff everyday.  You make it sound like people have to run around across town to do all these things.  News flash:  On the internet, electrons move at the speed of light.   Despite an average of 70 players in the lobby at any given time, nearly 200 pc and sim players play on OGT.  A few clicks of links on the internet didn't stop them.  In fact, look at TGCTours, they're an off-site entity and TGC thrived.   IMO, part of the reason why TGC has so many players is because it was available on consoles.

A reason I don't play Pro or TP is NOT the "more penalty" reason but the "you only get one shot at the backswing" (forget what the menu calls it). I don't know if it's the age thing (74) but sometimes I lose focus going back and I have to restart swing. I know you can fix that but I would like to play an uncompromised Pro or TP if I play it at all.

Here's an example of what I was referring to earlier with regards to TGC 2's variable textures in their 3D rough. I'm having trouble getting my screen shot to load for a better example of how much the height, density, and color palette can vary with it, but I'll get it uploaded somehow a little later.

Thanks John, that short rough looks a lot more varied and convincing than I was expecting. I hope PP can do a similar job. That long grass however.... that's another story!!!

Things like woods and hybrids having several colour options instead of just the white. Even same with putter. Just something for us to play with, seeing as an update to the game equipment seems a long way off and maybe only a PG2 option and with PG2 itself being a long way it seems, any small crumb would be better than nothing.

Skyrim, Cities:Skylines , Rfactor. All have had amazing success, longer life and most importantly - thriving communities and forums - because they allow modding.

For PG2 unlock access to at least the textures for clubs, clothes and golfers, and we'll gladly mod them ourselves.
